Lexus' Hiromu Naruse tribute video

Toyota’s chief test driver, 67 year old Hiromu Naruse (成瀬弘), died in a collision involving the Lexus LFA Nurburgring prototype. Reports stated that Naruse, a Toyota employee since 1967, lost control of the LFA and swerved into the oncoming lane and collided with a BMW.

Naruse-san will be deeply missed by the company and all of its fans. May he rest in peace.

Nissan Cube: The Japanese “box” car phenomenon no good for Europe?!

Back in November 2008, I wrote a post about Nissan's new Cube, a car that I really do like. However, it seems that it's too "Japanese" for the taste of Europeans. Only 686 Cubes have been sold during 2010 in UK, far below the target of 2000 units/year. This year, during the first nine months, 251 have been sold. In the Netherlands, sales so far this year are a dismal 107 units.

The current generation is the third one and in Japan the model has sold over 1 million units since its introduction in 1998. In terms of the US market, sales are hovering at a decent 20,000 units/year.

So, it's not hard to imagine that Nissan is seriously considering to axe the Cube from Europe for good.

Original post

Including its supporting industries and ranging from engine manufacture to creating the interfaces between cars and people, the auto industry is involved in a very broad swathe of manufacturing, and it is a direct player in the effort to reduce carbon emissions. Japan is one of the world's top manufacturers in the industry, with eight different car makers and a home market where the car has become a familiar tool and an integral part of day-to-day life.

The most straightforward way to reduce the impact of cars on the environment is to make smaller cars. Simplicity is the starting point for Japanese aesthetics, and Japan has a distinct category of mini-vehicles—also known as light cars, kei cars, or micro-cars.

Japanese culture has made huge strides in Europe and US over the past decade: manga, anime, Evos, WRXs and GT-Rs, sushi. But what about Japanese car design and, in particular, Japan's peculiar fascination with the car as a box? Space, utility and all the simple logic of a packing crate were some of the defining factors behind the creation. That and the ability to carry family and/or friends around in a roomy, comfy, five/seven seat cabin.

The Cube was conceived around the concept of 'my room'. Spend any time in Japan and you find you never really have enough space, whether at home, on the tube, in shops, on the street, wherever.

Toyota demonstrates iQ EV prototype

Toyota prototyped an electric vehicle (EV) based on the iQ and demonstrated it yesterday in Shenzhen, China. The demonstration took place along with the 25th World Battery, Hybrid and Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle Symposium and Exhibition (EVS25), an international symposium on electric vehicles.

Though the company announced the iQ-based EV at the 2009 North American International Auto Show, this is the first time that the vehicle has driven in a public place. Its release date has not been determined yet.

Japanese automakers are really keen when it comes to hybrids and EVs and Nissan has already revealed that in the next four years, three new EV models will be introduced (including an electric Infiniti car, a small commercial van and a small urban car).

LFAs spotted at Fuji Speedway

Two shiny LFAs were spotted at FSW by 7tune. What exactly was going on is a mystery and the only thing said by Toyota was... that it's a "test". The cars did occasional flying laps and for sure Toyota's engineers are fine tuning the car before the production starts in December. There are also rumours that a number of different grades will be available.

Anyway, no matter what exactly Toyota was testing, both cars look amazing...

A wicked Skyline HR31 from Australia!!!

I am not really into tuning - you know... "the fast and the furious" type of guy - but as I was passing by a kiosk, I saw the  latest issue of Banzai magazine with a really nice 240Z on the front cover. Anyway, I bought it and the article I liked the most was about a Nissan Skyline R31 (HR31 to be precise) from Australia.

The Skyline R31 generation is among my favourites and this particular car used to be a GTS-X. Now, after Nick Green took great care of it, it is powered by a tuned RB26DETT 2.6L DOHC 24V R6 turbo engine from Skyline GT-R R32 and produces... 528 bhp! Great work mate!!!
